I’ve worked on the agency side from big shops to creative boutiques and in-house for big tech companies to surging ones as well. And although the advertising landscape continues to change, my approach to creative remains the same: listen very carefully to the business objectives, discover a unique, human angle, choose the right tools, and have a reason for your decisions. Self-indulgent creative may be fun to concept and present, but it undermines trust and squanders precious time. Yes, be unique. Yes, be clever. Yes, be interesting. But make sure it all reflects real listening and an understanding of what the business goals are.
Leadership is a privilege, and while being a creative leader is certainly about producing outstanding creative, how you get there matters to me. Obstinate, entitled creatives pop up everywhere, and I never understood that look. I try to be someone people like working with and working for, not someone they comply with publicly and bad mouth privately. Maybe it’s just my Minnesota-nice roots, but I believe things like approachability, adaptability, accountability and a willingness to roll-up your sleeves and get something done are part of everyone's job description.
